Day 13
Most important lesson learnt
Learning about different type of search engines also help me as I use to use only websearch engines since they are the easiest and most famous ones out there, so I have never heard of a meta search engine before since most of the search engines I use does not provide one. As for directory base search engines I have tried using them before but they are not that great as the database is very small such that its hard to find alot of research materials.
All in all these 2 points are th most important things that I have learned in this CDS and maybe I will create a personal blog after this.
Day 11 + 12
Today is E-Learning so I spend the whole day finishing up my wiki work and to post it on the wiki. Also do about of editing for my portfolio since this the week we have to hand in.
Day 12
Today we presented what we did for our E-Learning which is the wiki article about our topic to the class. I was second to present and I have to talk about why I chose my topic and hope to acheive through the research done. Next I procced to explain the website that I have evaluated as a whole and give a short summery of the whole article and give out only the main points that are related to my topic.
After that we had to do one last discussion forum about is it ethical to assume a false identity or take on another person's identity on the web eg in chat rooms, email or any other form of Internet communication and how would I apply ethical considerations in your daily usage of Internet from one of the 3 choices given.
Personally I think is not ethical to assume false identity as it is an identity crime that can be punish by law. It is bad because people may be giving out false information or steal others identity to commit crime. Rapist and pedophiles tend to assume false identity online becuase they would lie to their target to go out with them.As for ethical considerations they can be applied in communication etiquette by treating others politely online instead of been rude or vulgar to others just because they don't know who you are in real life.
Day 10
Day 9
For the second half of our lesson we had to compare friendster and facebook which is two different services, and list down one strength and weakness of it. Friendster's weakness is that you cannot customise the profile pages.Strength is you get to meet more friends since that is what friendster was intended for. As for Facebook the weakness is it was once used as a tool that promoted attacks on the authorities. As for the strength is having games to keep you entertained and you are also able to play games with your friends.

Friendster VS Facebook
Friendster: Cannot customise the profile pages.
Facebook: Was used as a tool that promoted attacks on the authorities
Strength
Friendster: You get to meet more friends since that is what friendster was intended for.
Facebook: Have games to keep you entertained and you are also able to play games with your friends.
Both of them can never replace face to face social interactions as you don't get to see the person you are talking to and if its someone you know on the net, you will never know if the person is a girl or guy since he can pretend to be anything.
My dream holiday

The site I visit is very up to date and provides alot of information about the place I wanted to go. The site is also accurate as they have information from people who visit the place before. The coverage of the site is huge as they provide many information about different places to visit and provide useful links to other sources. The site is also free and easily accessible and easy to navigate. Overall the site is very well done and easy to use.
Day 7+8
Send the whole day at home since there is no class today other than having E-learning and filp through the lecture notes once to prepeare for test for the next day. I have found out about advocacy sites from the E-learning and also had post my views for one of my friend's post.
Day 8
We finish our class test for the first half of the lesson which is fairly easy. Next we had to do the online pactical 7 crosswords and quiz for another 20 mins before we have to apply what we learned last week to evaluate www.talkingcock.com and then disscuse about our views of the website. We are split into 3 groups and were given time to role play the foreigners role before the whole class come togther and share their views on the website if its good or bad.
Today we have learn to evaluate a resource that we have chose to use for our research using the template given in the practical and fill up the form. There are a few things that we are evaluating the site for.
The first is purpose which is if the site clearly state what the aims of it are. Next is coverage of the website if the informations given is useful and comprehensive. Also does the site provides links to other useful information sites? Next is authority of the site to see if there are any reviews about this site or has it been included in any gateways or virtual libraries. Also is this an authoritative source? Accuracy of the site is also taken note to see if it use research as a basis. Next currency is to see if the site is updated offen. Accessibility of site if its free or requires users to pay or log in to the site. The presentation and arrangement of the information is also evaluated to see if information is well presented and arranged. Usability of the site is also evaluted and a overall impression of the site is given.

Day 5
I manage to search information on how each work, for example a search engine operates, in the following order:
web crawling, using a program or automated script which browses the world wide web in a methodical, automated manner. Other less frequently used names for web crawlers are ants, automatic indexers, bots, and worms. Next is indexing which is to collects, parses, and stores data to facilitate fast and accurate information retrieval. Finally the last step searching is to search the query you have type in and display all the results.
I have come to a verdict of all 3 serach facilities Search engine is easy to use and you also get a lot of results from a few key words but there are too many sites to filter out the correct site you are looking for. Web directory are limited in results as they are dependent on editor to add sites into the directory. Results can vary between meta search engines based on a large number of variables and the results tend to be less relevant.
Overall, search engine is the best facility because it returns the most results and arranges the most relevant site at the top. It also allows you to find similar pages from site. It is also one of the most used search facility around the world. Around 28,454 million of searches are done on google alone which shows how popular search engines are.

Day 1+2
Day1
First day of the VT CDS we were brief on the portfolio that we are to submit at the end of the CDS and to select a topic from a list that we had to do research base on. After that we are suppose to research one it on the internet for one of each internet resources which includes a disscusion forum,www. site and a magazine or journal entry on the topic.
I chose to the topic on impacts of online gaming on teens. I use google to search for the topics but there are very few topics that are dicectly related. Other than that the whole lesson was spend mostly on hunting down the correct websites for my research.
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/forum/51- online gamer forum which have a active community that discuss anything on online games.
http://www.nickyee.com/pubs/Yee%20-%20MMORPG%20Demographics%202006.pdf
A research on online gaming and also describe the impacts of online gaming the pros and cons of it and the general methodology.
Day2
Second day of the lesson was a follow up on what we did the day before but we have to find a personal and a organisational site for our topic instead. After that we reflect on the search activity like what search engine we used and what are the key words. For me I use google since its the best one out there and as for key words I use "Impact of online gaming on teens"
This is the new sites that I found for today
http://www.digitalcream.com.au/blog/games-parenting/online-games-good-for-teenagers/- shows all the pros of online gaming on teens. In addition I used one of the site from yesterday as a organisation site.
http://www.nickyee.com/pubs/Yee%20-%20MMORPG%20Demographics%202006.pdf- found yester day but use as a organisation site instead for the practical.
After that we compile all the information we found and cite the source using APA we learned in CMSK before passing it to our group leader to finish up the rest. Creating my very first blog was the major event for the day as most of our work will be done on this blog alone and I got a taste of using a blog for the first time.
FIrst day blog
2 of the websites i found interesting
http://www.dalong.net/- korean model kit site with images of the completed models uncolored and a complete gallery of almost every robot model made. Good place to go when you want to see how a completed model look when buying.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/-Good place to go to look for games or release dates. They have a message board to chat with other members and also provides images hints and guides for games.
